Title: Using Important events to Summarize

I. Standard Benchmark(s) and Learning Objective:

When completing this task, students will learn how to properly summarize a piece of text given and be able to decipher the good, important information from the "fluff" or less important information. When completing this assignment, students will learn how to find the good information in text and what the necessary aspects of a summary are. Overall students will take away the overall knowledge what is good information vs. what is not good information.

II. The Learning Environment

The learning environment will be groups of students reading a text and collaborating together to find the good parts of information. After each group has completed their individual task, the class will come together and discuss what information they picked and why.

III. The Learning Activities
In this lesson, the teacher introduces the idea of summarizing events and explains to her class how to effectively summarize important events and had the whole class participate in a practice event. Using a "think sheet", which she provided them with, the teacher aided them in writing their own summaries for a story. After she broke all the students into pairs where they proofread each other's work and gave feedback. She had them look for if the summary if it was in order, specific enough, or too detailed, if it leaves anything out, and if it made sense and flows from sentence to sentence. She ended the lesson by reflecting on their work and what they learned about summarizing important events.

IV. Personal Reflections (Yours)
I think the teacher was very effective in teaching this Standards Bases Lesson. She explained the activity thoroughly to the students. They students were very well behaved and participated a lot during the activity. They seemed to understand and be engaged in what the teacher was teaching. Nothing surprised me about the lesson. I think this is a perfect example of a SBL because it was very smooth and covered what they should learning about at that age level.
